SEAMLESS

The pair's tenure managing the squad has seen England reach the World Cup semi-final in 2018, and the final of Euro 2020 earlier this year.

Only Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey would have spent more time in the job.

There is often the temptation to look at Southgate and map out his Premier League comeback.

Southgate is on to a rare thing with England and he knows it.

"Sometimes people are looking what's next in life and their career, and don't live a fulfilling life where you are.

In football, when you ’ ve got a team who are a good team, when you ’ ve done a lot of the work culturally and you ’ ve got them to a point where they can challenge, then you want to bring that to fruition.

"To step away at a moment where we still think the next few years can be very exciting … that would have been difficult to live with.

if this contract is the last, i will only be 53 at the end of it and i hope there 'll be a lot of my life at the end of it !"

Southgate's work in transforming the culture around the England setup has been extraordinary, specifically in terms of creating a positive connection between the team and supporters; making players want to report and express themselves.

"We had three players make their debuts this month [ Emile Smith Rowe, Aaron Ramsdale and Conor Gallagher ] and they enjoyed it.

It is to win a major trophy.

He is driven by taking the decisive step.

Gareth Southgate has extended his deal as England manager through to December 2024.

Assuming he remains in place at the contract's conclusion Southgate will have occupied the position for more than eight years, making him England ’ s longest-serving manager since Bobby Robson.

Following the announcement, Southgate said : "I am delighted that Steve and I have been able to extend our stay in our respective roles.

it remains an incredible privilege to lead this team.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mark ( Bullingham, FA chief executive ), John ( McDermott, technical director ) and the board for their support- and of course the players and support team for their hard work.

"We have a great opportunity in front of us and I know they and the fans are all excited about what this squad could achieve in future."

Speaking at a news conference, Southgate was asked if he had been tempted by taking on a club role.

he said : "we 've only won one world cup but we have to believe that's possible, it's an aim we have as a team.

"The success comes with revised expectations.

We used to celebrate qualifying, now we expect to reach the latter stages.

"People will ask how we can afford this, but I will say this is a performance-related rise.

We are delighted Gareth and Steve have chosen to continue."

The FA said in a statement : "Southgate, who marks five years in charge at the end of this month, has overseen a period of positive progress guiding England to a FIFA World Cup semi-final and UEFA Nations League third place before securing the best men's performance in 55 years with the UEFA Euro final this summer.

The two-year extension means Southgate will remain manager until December 2024, taking in that year's European Championship after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Under Southgate's guidance England have progressed from being a side, when he initially took over as caretaker in September 2016, that had just crashed out of Euro 2016 against Iceland to one that has reached a semi-final and a final in its past two major tournaments.

Did we think three years ago at this point we ’ d be sitting here on the back of a semi-final and final?

England have won 15 of their 19 matches in 2021 and Southgate, whose assistant Steve Holland has also signed a new contract, suggested similarly relentless form would put them there or thereabouts.

The announcement ends the speculation surrounding Southgate's immediate future and means he will lead England at Euro 2024 should they qualify for the tournament in Germany.

southgate says he is now looking forward to creating "new memories" with the three lions.

"I'd like to say how excited we are, the last five years have been an incredible experience," said Southgate, speaking at a media conference to announce his new deal on Monday.

"I 've always wanted through my life to be fairly rewarded, but to deliver value for money for the organisation I worked for," Southgate said.

Sky Sports' Peter Smith : There had been a feeling that the lure of club football may tempt Gareth Southgate after next year's World Cup but his contract extension is a real statement of his belief in England's exciting future.

England will go to Qatar 2022 as serious contenders.
